Actual burial location unknown. A cenataph has been placed in the family plot in Clay County, Kansas in 2009.
Born 1846 in Eschert, Switzerland and died October 13, 1902 Randolph County, Arkansas. He came to America in 1852 at the age of 6 yrs. on the Bark Hahnemann. The ship departed Havre, France and arrived in the Port of New York. Other family on the passenger list are his father August Sauvain, step-mother Marianne Sauvain and his sister Sophia 4yrs. Baby brother Albert was not listed. 1860 Indiana census shows the family living in Adams County. August, Marianne, David Samuel, Sophia, Albert, Lewis, John, Jule. (Eva born 1861) The family moved to Paulding County, Ohio. And in November 1864 David entered the Civil War as a Sub. Private. He was in Co D 67th Reg. Ohio Inf. He transfered to Co B. And in November 1865 he mustered out of the Military in Richmond, VA and returned to Ohio. Deed shows he bought land in Ohio while in Civil War. Between 1865 and 1870 the Sauvain family moves to Kansas. Sophia Sauvain stayed in Ohio. Mother Marianne dies between 1865 & 1870 as she is not listed on the 1870 Clay County, KS census (later, 2 brothers return to Ohio and Eva is raised by Sargeant family). David marries Rosalie Surprenant October 1, 1871 in Clay County, KS. Children: William E., Mathilda V., Mary V., Wesley A., Minnie M., Ida E., Alexine O., Anna L., Elmer/Oscar S. Rosalie died later in the day after giving birth to Elmer on January 1, 1890.
David died at the home of his daughter Mary V. (Sauvain) & George Kiefer in Randolph County, Arkansas on Oct. 13, 1902.
