Mr. JONATHAN BROOKS, aged 73 years.
- Connecticut Gazette (New London, CT), Wednesday, 20 May 1807, page [3].
Concerning Jonathan Brooks (1767-1848) and the "Jonathan Brooks 1786" tomb:
". . . The father of Mr. Brooks [also named Jonathan] emigrated to this town from Woburn, Mass., about the year 1760, and married [Mercy] the daughter of Mr. James Chapman, a worthy citizen of the place. Jonathan, their oldest son, was born in 1768;"
". . . In this tomb the father and the mother [Jonathan d. 1807 & Mercy d. 1806] were deposited, and here, some forty years after the death of his sister [1786+40=1826, but actually 1834], the first wife [Mary] of Mr. Brooks was laid. At this time those ancient visits to the tomb were again renewed; for a considerable period he went in at the close of every day and sitting down by the dead, in low and melancholy tones rehearsed all the occurrences of the day, often asking her if she were satisfied, and entreating her counsel for the future. Time, however, mitigated the traces of this deep sorrow, and he entered into a second connection with an amiable woman [Jane in 1837], who survives to lament his loss. . . ."
