A REVOLUTIONARY WAR SOLDIER
"Captain William Brooks was born in Woburn, son of Nathan (1706-1751) and his wife Sarah Wyman (1706-1747). He married in Hollis in 29 Mar 1759 with his first wife, Abigail Kemp, daughter of Zerubbabel Kemp, Jr. and wife, Abigail Lawrence.
William was a Blacksmith by trade, as many in his family before him; soon after marrying, he moved to Hollis to be the town Blacksmith."
"William enlisted in the Hollis militia and supported the Revolutionary cause. He served as Ensign in 1778 in the Rhode Island campaign, under Capt. David Emerson in Col. Noah Lovewell's New Hampshire Rgt; then as 2nd Lt. under Capt. Daniel Emerson's Co., Col. Moses Nichols Rgt., 2nd Lt. with Capt. John Mills in the regiment of Col. Reynolds to Londonderry NH. As the war ended, William Brooks advanced to rank of Captain in 1781."
"After the war, the family removed to Lyndeborough, NH, where he farmed and maintained the blacksmith trade. He died there in 1804."
"He and Abigail Kemp had 11 children reaching adulthood, all born in Hollis: The eldest son was William, Jr. (1760), followed by Abigail ((1762), Betsy (1764), Sarah (1766), Isaac (1768), Mary (1771), Samuel (1774), Martha (1776), Leonard (1779), John (1781), Susannah (1783)."
"After his wife Abigail died in 1787, he married second, Hepsibah Powers, in Hancock, NH on 20 Sept. 1787. He died in Lyndeborough, NH in 1804."
