Betty was a daughter of James Alexander Birss (1881-) and his 1st wife, Margaret Rosetta Maher (1890-1951) who married in 1908 and later divorced.

- On August 18 1929, at the Public Hospital, Dannevirke, Betty Margaret, dearly beloved daughter of Margaret Rosetta Birss; aged seventeen years. R.I.P.
The friends of Mrs R. R. Birss, of Woodville, will regret to hear that her daughter Betty died in the Dannevirke hospital on Sunday evening from rheumatic fever. She was ill only a few days.

* A very old resident of the Woodville district, in the person of Mrs Christian Galbraith, passed away on Sunday, her death being the result of a recent accident.
* The friends of Mrs R. R. Birss, of Woodville, will regret to hear that her daughter Betty died in the Dannevirke hospital on Sunday evening from rheumatic fever. She was ill only a few days.
* Woodville sustained a further loss yesterday when Mrs Anna Ollson passed away at the residence of her son in McLean street. The deceased lady was the relict of Mr Hans Olsson and had attained the age of 83 years.
* Mr Peterson of Woodville, is also seriously ill.
* The friends of Mr E. J. Harding, Papatawa, will regret to hear of the serious illness from pneumonia of his eldest son.
* Mr G. W. Wardrop, Woodville, who has been in the Pahiatua hospital, has recovered sufficiently to be able to return to his home.
