Former teacher Elizabeth Diggs Harden, 83, died Monday, April 28, 2008, at a daughter's home in Decatur, IL.

Her funeral service will be at noon Saturday at Quinn Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Paris. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.

Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. today at Trinity Funeral Home.

Born July 25, 1924, in Paris, she was the daughter of the late Artie and H.C. Diggs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph H. Harden.

She was valedictorian of the Central High School Class of 1940 and a graduate of Lane College in Jackson. She was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

She was a second-grade teacher at the former Henry County Training School, the former Lee Elementary School and Inman School, which was then an elementary school.

She was a member of Quinn Chapel for many years and served on the board of the Paris Housing Authority. She was also one of the original organizers of the Central High School Alumni Association. After moving to Decatur to live with her daughter, she was affiliated with St. Peter's AME Church there.

Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Ann Harden Chambliss and Janet Olive Harden Bunch, both of Decatur; a brother: H.C. (Johnnie) Diggs of Chicago;

Three grandchildren: Kemont (Meghan) Chambliss, Joel Bunch and Janae (Patrick) O'Neal; 10 great-grandchildren, several other relatives and friends.
