Alan L. Morehouse, 86, of West Lafayette, died at 8:01 p.m. Thursday, April 24, 2008, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center.

Born May 8, 1921, in West Lafayette, he was a 1939 graduate of Klondike High School and a son of the late Alpha L. and Elsie Marshall Morehouse.

He served in the Army from 1944 to 1945. He received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University in 1947 and a master's degree from Indiana University in 1965.

His first marriage was to Marjorie E. Holt. On Sept. 20, 1977, he married Grace E. Moore. She died Dec. 29, 2007.

Mr. Morehouse retired from teaching in 1983 and worked for The Wild Bird Shoppe for 13 years.

He was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church, National Wildlife Federation, National Audubon Society, Purdue Alumni Association, Indiana State Teachers Association and the Indiana Retired Teachers Association.

He enjoyed bird watching, woodworking, traveling and photography, where he competed and won awards. He obtained his private pilot's license and enjoyed flying his plane.

Surviving are two sons, Carl Morehouse (wife: Janna Minsk) of Ventura, Calif., and Mark L. Morehouse of Lake Mary, Fla.; a daughter, Marian McMinds (husband: Garry) of Durham, N.C.; two stepdaughters, Sarah Barber of Cazadero, Calif., and Mary Fagan (husband: Kenn) of Friendswood, Texas; a sister, Mary Margaret "Peggy" Klaverenga of Lafayette; and a brother, Alpha Morehouse (wife: Dorette) of Muscatine, Iowa.

Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by a sister, Jeanne Kowalski, and his first wife, Marjorie, who died April 21, 2008.
