In 1845, when Joseph Gladin was 15 years old, William (his father) moved on Fredrick Creek in Oregon County west of Couch, Missouri. When the Civil War broke out, Joseph enlisted in Col. Freeman's Regiment Cavalry. After the Civil War, he moved out by the Grand Gulf. The house that he built in 1867 is still standing.
In the middle of the 1870's Joseph moved to Clifton, where he had a general merchandise store and grist mill at Spring City just north of Mammoth Spring, Arkansas. In the middle 1880's, when the railroad came to Thayer, Joseph moved to Thayer from Clifton and opened a meat market in Thayer in the block where the Bank of Thayer is now located. In the middle 1890's Joseph moved to Lanton, MO, where he was postmaster for several years.
