He received his education at the Sacred Heart Academy, Greene, and started farming at a very early age for his dad and as a hired man for several neighbors. In 1940, he took over the feed grinding business for his brother for four years.
He married Henrietta Irene Ackley Oct. 2, 1947, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Greene.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Okinawa and Ryukyu Islands. Following his discharge, he worked for the telephone company as a lineman and later for Allied Construction for three years and operated a portable feed grinder business for area farmers for six years. He farmed in the Greene area from 1958 to 1976 and continued to farm while working at Farmers Co-op. He retired in 1991.
He is survived by two sons: Jerry (Joni) of Greene and Jeff (Lisa) of Coon Rapids; a daughter, Jayne (Kenneth) Knapp of Greene; a daughter-in-law, Patty Meek of Ackley; ten grandchildren: Rob (Darci) Meek, Lisa (Jon) Duncomb, John (Roxanne) Meek, Rick (friend Lisa) Meek, Jamie (Jamie) Meek, Brandie Meek, Dustie Meek, Heather Knapp, Henry Meek and Harry Meek; sixteen great-grandchildren; two sisters: Bonnie Lynch of Greene and Faith (Paul) Porter of Bellevue, Neb.; and a brother, Donald (Cheryl) of Charles City.
He was preceded in death by: his wife, Henrietta, in 1999; two sons: Duane in 1948 and Jim in 2001; his parents; four sisters: Virginia Reams, Shirley Schlanegan, Mary Jean Ramker and Ruth Heitland; and a brother, John Meek.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Greene. Military rites will be conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene. Public visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel, Greene, where there will be a 7 p.m. wake service, and for an hour before services Monday at the church. Memorials may be directed to the Wayne Meek Memorial Fund in care of the family.
