Alexander Andrew Merrell was the son of Benjamin Merrill of Rowan CO, North Carolina and Sarah Dacus of South Carolina. His grandparents were Jonathan Merrell and Nancy Elliott of Rowan County, North Carolina.

He married Sarah Elizabeth Black on Nov. 29, 1857 in Jasper, Texas. Their children were:
