Son of John R. and Mary Colson. Grandson of Henry T. Colson, who fought as a partisan ranger (27th Virginia Battalion, later part of the 25th Virginia Cavalry Regiment) in the Confederate army.

At age 19, William registered for the World War 1 draft, giving his address as 314 Seneca, Bartlesville, OK, and his nearest relative as his mother, Mary.

At age 21, William applied for a passport to spend a year in Tampico, Mexico. The passport application gave his heighth as 6 feet, his complexion as fair, his hair and eyes as brown. He worked as a rig builder in the oil fields of Bartlesville, OK.

By 1930, William, now married to Nadine Odessa Justice, lived in the town of Katherine, Mohave County, AZ. No children at that time.
