Co. H 85th Ind Inf. John was a Civil War Veteran injured in a battle in the state of Georgia and on disability pension the remainder of his life. Born 1819 in Franklin Co., KY and raised by Wm and Nancy Poe McAnally. John and his two oldest sons, Thomas and Cary all joined the 85th Indiana Volunteers at the same time leaving his pregnant wife Mary Herndon McAnally with three children under the age of 11 to tend the farm.

John's great-great grandchildern John R. McAnally b. 1933 Indiana and Charles L. McAnally b. 1940 have via Y-DNA testing proved that John McAnally b. 1819 was really a direct descendant of Samuel Jackson b. 1756 Prince William County, Virginia. Samuel was a Revolutionary War Veteran who died in Morgan Co., IL 1844.
