Rodger was born July 11, 1949 in Marshalltown, Iowa to Roy and Garnet (Gale) McKinney. He was raised here and attended Marshalltown High School. He attended Westmar University in LeMars, Iowa. He attended Seminary in Naperville, IL, and graduated from the Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, IL in 1975. Rodger served many churches in Iowa, including Kalona United Methodist, Davenport Faith, Sioux Rapids UCC and Methodist, and Anita and Wiota United Methodist Churches. He retired in 1998, and continued to live in Wiota before moving to West Des Moines to be closer to his daughter and family.
He married the love of his life, Carole Hunter, on June 19, 1971 in Marshalltown, Iowa. In this union, they adopted their daughter, Beth. Rodger was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers, Iowa Hawkeyes, and Chicago Cubs. He enjoyed woodworking, singing, and playing instruments, such as the trumpet and guitar. He enjoyed collecting firearms, such as rifles, pistols, and replicas of historical firearms. He is deeply missed by his family and friends.
Rodger is survived by his wife, Carole; his daughter Elisabeth (Travis) Lovett of West Des Moines, IA; his grandchildren, Tate and Cassidy; his sister, Carolyn DeLay of Atlantic, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Rodger is preceded in death by his parents.
