Marcella Barnes Obituary
Marcella Louise (Looney) Barnes passed from this life quietly and in peace on Tuesday November 21, 2023 at the age 104. She was born Marcella Louise Felkins on March 11, 1919 near Minneola, Kansas to Ed and Millie Felkins. Her family called her Louise. She was proceeded in death by her parents, 9 brothers, and 2 sisters, the husbands of 3 marriages, and recently the unexpected passing of her daughter Wanda Cova of Lincoln, Ca. Marcella is survived by 3 of her 4 children, daughter Carol Koehler Oroville, Ca, and sons Don Looney and Jim Looney, both of Ukiah Ca. She leaves 12 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 13 great, great, grandchildren. Marcella often spoke of the pride she had growing up in a large, close family that worked hard and enjoyed being together. When very young she said they cut and boiled sugarcane in a tank with a wood fire, then pressed it to make molasses to sell or trade. They cut firewood, worked seasonal harvests, and lived off what the land could provide. She attended school in a one room school house in Kansas. Her older brothers would hitch a horse to a buggy for a six-mile trip to school each day. She would smile and recall as a little girl dancing on a truck bed while her brother played a harmonica. With her parents and two brothers they migrated to the Oregon/California border area of Tule Lake and Merrill and opened a wood yard. They made the journey in a flatbed pickup truck with clothes and bedding and her mom's new wood cook stove bought by her brothers. When they first approached the mountains, her mother would get out and walked some for fear of the steep mountain roads. While working a potato harvest around the age of 14 near Vale, Oregon she met Glen Looney from Wetumka, Oklahoma. At the age of 16 she married Glen on Jan 10, 1936 in Yuba City and would have four children. They bought 40 acres near Sutter, Ca. and started a small dairy and raised alfalfa. Glen died in November, 1965. Later Marcella would remarry and move to Arizona where she loved the desert. She would write in the local newspaper community events page. In 1972 she settled in Ukiah to be close to her sons and other family. After a hip replacement at the age of 102 she moved to Mountain View Senior Care. Marcella being accustomed to independent life was a bit reluctant to the change of allowing others to do things for her. The caring staff won her over and a wonderful relationship developed as they cared for her as their own grandma. Marcella will be laid to rest near her parents at Live Oak, California. The family is very grateful to the volunteers from Meals on Wheels for their gracious deliveries. The Adventist Hospice Services provided compassionate care and family support.
