Daniel died on board the 'Schichallion' a month into the journey after having had bronchitis for 4 days, whilst emigrating to New Zealand with his family.

Daniel's family on board were: His parents & their first 7 children. Lydia's mother, 49 year old Mary Kemp, Lydia's brothers Daniel, Edward, Elijah and sister Elizabeth Kemp (all single) and her brother Frederick Kemp, his wife Harriet and their 3 children, 6 year old Elijah, 4 year old Willie, 2 year old Harriet and a baby daughter born 27 March 1874. They all settled in Woodville as part of the original Woodville Farm Settlement.
