Elizabeth "Betty" Murphy passed away peacefully on December 25, 2023 at the age of 91 years old surrounded by her family. Born on December 31, 1931 to Patrick and Mary Dempsey, both Irish Immigrants, she was raised with her two sisters in East Orange, NJ. After graduating from Montclair Immaculate Conception High School, she attended Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School. Shortly thereafter, she met the love of her life Gerald "Herky" Murphy and settled in Glen Ridge where they raised their three children.
A devout Catholic, Betty was an active parishioner and volunteer at Holy Name Church in East Orange for 41 years. She worked at Seton Hall University (SHU) for 25 years. While working in the SHU Athletic Department, she made it to every basketball game and traveled to the NCAA Final Four in 1989 to cheer on the Pirates with Herky. An avid golfer she and her husband spent many afternoons at East Orange Golf Club in Short Hills and traveled often to play in Myrtle Beach.
Her husband Herky passed away in 1999 just after their 41st wedding anniversary.
After retiring from Seton Hall, Betty spent the remainder of her life enjoying her grandchildren. She spent her days traveling to sporting events to cheer them on at every imaginable sport, and activity, as she continued her volunteer activities with the church. Betty's warm and loving nature brought joy to all who met her, but mostly to her family who will miss the magical Christmas festivities that she celebrated until her passing.
