Ellen (Helen) White was born in Toronto, Canada to her parents William and Sarah White. At the age of 19 she had her first child Caroline E., also known as Carrie. She met and married her husband Albert George Payne while he was in the British Royal Navy and on duty in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada; they married on August 6, 1885. He adopted her daughter Carrie from a previous relationship and together they had Isabel (Hayes), Sarah Ellen, Alice May (Dobeson), and twin boys Albert Edward and Thomas Fraser. Sarah sadly died as a child at the age of nine. As a family they lived in Devon and Wales.

Ellen and Albert did not stay together. Carrie appears to have married and stayed in England. The son Albert Edward remained in the Navy with his father and Ellen with the rest of the family moved back to Canada and settled in Victoria, British Columbia. After her move to British Columbia Ellen went by Helen and it is this name that appears on her grave marker. After a brief time in the Port Coquitlam Home for the Aged, she passed away at the age of 81.
