Susan Jeanne Newsom Cantwell, age 68, passed away on December 3, 2016 in Austin, Texas. She was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on March 23, 1948, and was the eldest child of John D. and Eileen (Zike) Newsom.

Susan held a BA in Elementary Education and an MA in counseling from Louisiana State University. She was a beloved teacher and guidance counselor at several schools in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, including Capitol Middle School and Dufrocq Elementary. Her dedication to her students inspired great devotion from them, especially those who needed a caring influence in their lives.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Valerie (Newsom) Achee, and is survived by brothers John D. Newsom, II and Michael Newsom; her children and their spouses, Stacey Hathaway-Bell and Brad and Michael T. Hathaway, Jr. and Erin; and her grandsons, Sebastion, Spencer and Liam.

Susan will be remembered for her loving, generous nature, and especially for her devotion to her grandsons.

A memorial in Baton Rouge will be scheduled early in 2017. Those wishing to honor her memory are encouraged to donate to the ACLU, Amnesty International, or the ASPCA.
