Col. George Strother Gaines, the Choctaw Indian agent and brother of Gen. Edmund Pendleton Gaines. Col. Gaines was a state senator and president of the Alabama State Bank. Gainesville, Alabama was named for him. He advised the Napoleonic refugees to establish their Vine & Olive Colony at Demopolis. He married his cousin Ann Lawrence Gaines, daughter of Young Gaines and Esther Lawrence Gaines.

Portrait in the Roberts-Taylor house, Government Street, Mobile, home of his great-grand-nephew, Capt. J.L. Abbot, next door to 908 Government, the home of his grandson George Stark Gaines who married Laura Roberts Pillans' granddaughter, Mary Isbell Pillans.

Gaineswood. The right block contains the original log house. The porte-cochere leads to the front door on the side which originally was the entrance to the open dog-trot or breezeway between two large rooms downstairs. The original logs are still inside the walls.
