Verga Alice Brookshire

(March 09, 1913 - April 20, 2008)

Verga Alice Brookshire was born March 9, 1913, and went home to be with the Lord on April 20, 2008.

Daughter of Sarah and Ransom Ferris, she was the next-to-youngest child in a family of 10 brothers and sisters.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Homer Mulvaney who died in 1939, Ervin Robert Hooper who died in 1981 and Glen Brookshire who died in 1998.

She graduated from Quapaw High School and attended Miami Business College.

She served as a bookkeeper for the St. Louis Painting Contracting Company during construction of the new B.F. Goodrich plant in Miami, Okla.

During World War II, she trained as a welder and constructed Liberty Ships for the Kaiser Shipyard in Richmond, Calif.

She was later a garment inspector and retired from Lerners Brothers in Baxter Springs, Kan.

Verga was a vibrant person who enjoyed creative writing and dearly loved children.

She also followed Major League Baseball and met several of the game's greats, including personally visiting the homes of Hall of Famers Carl Hubbell, Joe Sewell and Jocko Conlan.

She impressed upon all who were close to her the value of education and a life of giving to others. Most importantly, she demonstrated a love for Jesus Christ and knew that she would one day be received by Him.

She is survived by one son, Loren Mulvaney and wife Mary Sue of Tulsa, Okla.; one daughter, Karen Kessler and husband Robert of Seneca, Mo.; four grandchildren, Tim Kessler of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Joy Hicks and husband Dave of Joplin, Mo., Jennifer Mulvaney of Tulsa, Okla., and Jeremy Mulvaney and wife Susan of Owasso, Okla.; seven great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren and a host of extended family and friends.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Paul Thomas Funeral Home in Picher.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
