Barbara "Faye" Armel, 87, of Winchester, Virginia, died peacefully on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at her home surrounded by family.

Mrs. Armel was born in Front Royal, Virginia on January 12, 1936. She was the first child of Gideon Alton Atwood and Madoline Marie Morris Atwood who both preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her sister Judith in 1942, her niece Angela Faye Atwood in 2006, and her nephew Fred Carl Rettberg in 2023.

Faye graduated from Warren County High School in 1954 and attended Madison College (currently James Madison University) where she majored in early childhood education. Upon graduation she taught 3rd grade in the Alexandria, VA school district before moving to Frederick County Virginia to teach at Robinson Elementary and Senseny Road Elementary School. She was a member of Market Street United Methodist Church, Winchester, where prior to her stroke, she was very active in the United Methodist Women. She was also very active in King's Daughters and Department 56 Club.

She married Julius Russell Armel on July 29, 1962, and they remained happily married until her departure from this earth.

In addition to her husband Julius, Faye is survived by her sons Brian Russell Armel (wife Sukanchana) of Winchester, VA and Gregory Russell Armel (wife Julie) of Rocky Mount, NC. She also had four grandchildren Carson Patrick Armel, Brenton Andrew Armel, and Justin Matthew Armel of Rocky Mount, NC and Colton Julius Armel of Winchester, VA. Faye is also survived by two siblings, Donald Louis Atwood (wife Barbara) and Anna Kathryn Pomeroy (husband Ronald) both of Front Royal, VA, her aunt Nellie "Winks" Morris of Front Royal, VA and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Jones Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 12th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A funeral service will be held the following day at Jones Funeral Home at 1:00 pm with a graveside service following at Mount Hebron Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her nephews Al Atwood, Aadon Atwood, Jeff Mongold, and John Mongold and her grandsons Brenton Armel and Carson Armel. Donations in Faye's name may be made to Market Street United Methodist Church or Blue Ridge Hospice.

The family would like to thank the caregivers at Blue Ridge Hospice, Home Instead, Winchester Pulmonary, and Winchester Medical Center for the thoughtful care they provided over the years.
