James Billings was born 27 Sep 1836 in Lawrence County, IN, to William Billings and Mary Davis. He moved to Richland County, IL, when young and served in the 8th IL Infantry, USA, in the Civil War, fighting under General Grant at Fort Henry and Donelson, Shiloh, and Vicksburg. He was wounded on a mortar barge in the river at Vicksburg and was awarded a pension. He married Darkis Tolliver in 1855, and after her death married Cora Anada Pearson. He moved west from IL to Bates County MO and then to Crawford County, KS, then south to Benton County, AR, to Joplin, Jasper County, MO, and finally to Cherokee County OK to live with his son James Starling Billings. He died there on 27th August 1918.

Gravesite Details

His son filed an application for reimbursement from the pension bureau for a tombstone on the 6th of March 1919, and indicated his father was buried in New Home Cemetery in Cherokee County. The stone is not now evident in New Home Cemetery, however.
