Donald Albert Zaitz, 79, went home to Jesus on December 3, 2023 surrounded by family, at his home in Socastee, South Carolina. He was born on August 14, 1944 in Antigo, Wisconsin, middle son to the late Albert James Zaitz & Doris June Strobel Zaitz.

Don had a zest for life. He grew up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin and in his young adult years, he enjoyed softball, bowling and a nice cold beer. Don proudly served our country in the United States Air Force for 22 years. At the time of his enlistment, Don became an expert marksman and was stationed in Japan, Germany, Vietnam and the United States. He met Margie while stationed in Germany and married the "one he chased, until she caught him." Later in life, Don enjoyed being outdoors golfing, working on his yard, fishing, working on cars, tending to his garden and bird-watching. Don also enjoyed tinkering with his many projects and creating new inventions to help with daily tasks. While Don was a people person, having become head bartender at Secessions Golf Club in Beaufort, SC and drumming up quite the friend circle wherever he lived, he was also a private person who enjoyed his peace and quiet. He could be found in his glider chair relaxing on the porch, watching the Packers, Fox News or the neighborhood happenings. He relished the simple things in life such as homemade bread buns and cheese and Margie's peanut butter cookies, although he was known to sneak the chocolate chip ones as well. Don's caring demeanor also led him to volunteer his time with the Knights of Columbus on yearly golf tournaments, helping with hot dog and t-shirt sales and projects for the children in the community as well as planning St Michael's involvement in the yearly March for Life in Washington D.C. Above all else, Don loved being with his family and loved them with his whole heart. He would be there for them with a strong word or gentle touch, whichever was needed at the time. He will be missed more than words can express.

Left to cherish Don's memory are his adoring wife of over 54 years, Margaret "Margie" Fomich Zaitz; their children, Michael "Mike" Zaitz (Ann), Christina "Tina" Wright (Travis) and Diana Zaitz Jenkins; grandchildren, Joseph Zaitz, Braiden Jenkins, Nathaniel and Matthew Wright; he is also survived by his brothers Laverne Zaitz and Lester Zaitz.

Don is reunited in passing with his parents, Albert & Doris and his sister, Cecile Nicholson.

A Celebration of Don's life will be held on Friday December 15, 2023 at 3:00PM at St. Michael Catholic Church, 542 Cypress Ave. Garden, City, SC 29576. Internment will immediately follow, within the church columbarium.

A Prayer Service for Don will be held on Thursday December 14, 2023 at 6:00PM at Burroughs Funeral Home, 3558 Old Kings Highway, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576. The family will gather to greet friends immediately following the prayer service.

At the request of the family, please consider memorial contributions in lieu of flowers. Donations in Don's name may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Foundation at www.stjude.org or the family strongly encourages you to give the gift of life and donate blood and/or platelets at your local Red Cross as transfusions were a constant reality for Don in the past year and a half.
