DON NEWTON
FEBRUARY 25, 1909 ~ APRIL 18, 2008

Don Newton went to meet Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior, on Friday, April 18, 2008 at age 99 and two months.
Don Newton was a great-grandson of Benjamin Newton, who moved to the south in Greenville, Butler County, Alabama from North Carolina in the 1820's and soon after brought his parents, Amos and Dicey Kitchens Newton, two sisters and two brothers to the area. Don was born February 25, 1909 to John Benjamin Newton and Exie Franklin Newton at Pigeon Creek, Butler County, Alabama. In October 1921, Don, then 12 years old, moved with his parents and siblings to near the Byrneville Community, in north Escambia County, Florida. Don was preceded in death by his parents, seven siblings, his first born infant daughter and his beloved wife of over 69 years, Mae Bell Garrett Newton.
Don is survived by sisters Louise Dockins and Duffie Wells and family member Martha (Grady) Sims, three daughters, two sons, 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grand children and two great-great grandchildren: Voncile (Jack) Hall, Pensacola, their 2 sons and daughter: Derek (Kari), Austin, TX, daughters Alexandra, Mackenzie and Talia (Ryan) Young, Houchston, GA, their son Reed and daughter Reise; Kevin (Angie) Hall, Delray Beach, FL; and Tamara (Carl) Weber, Flower Mound, TX, three sons, David, John-Paul, Joel and daughter Grace. Donnie (Bob) White, San Jose CA, three sons, Andy (Laurie) Corona, CA, daughter Celia and son David; Greg, San Francisco, CA; and Gary (Melody), San Jose, CA and daughter Rachel; Yvonne (Hugh) Bass, Pensacola, two daughters, Belinda ("Geno") Fowler, Pensacola; Kimberly (Doug) McMurray, Tallahassee, FL son Brandon and daughter Ashton; Johnny (Charlotte), Pace, daughter, Lisa (Bobby) Taylor, Pace, daughters Paige and Brooke; Dewayne (Becky), Pensacola, two daughters Allison and Amanda and one son, Matthew.
As a youngster, Don Newton engaged in farming in the Pigeon Creek, Alabama and Byrneville, Florida areas. In the Century area in the late 1920's, he worked on several highway/utility projects. From late 1929 to mid-1941, he worked at the Alger-Sullivan Lumber Company in Century. He lived nearby in company housing, so was one of the first to aid in fighting a major fire at the company in the late 1930's. In June 1941, Don moved his family to Pensacola and worked at several jobs, including one at T.T. Todd, until he began working at Overhaul and Repair (O&R) at NAS Pensacola as an aircraft engine mechanic in January 1942, where he worked until retiring on December 23, 1974. Afterward, he drove cars for AVIS for several years. On September 6, 1995, at age 86, Don had major open-heart surgery with triple by-pass and aortic valve replacement. The heart surgeon said Don had the body and stamina of a man 20 or more years younger. Don still lived alone, did some of his own house and yard work, raised a garden and drove his own car to various rest homes and hospitals to cheer up the "old" and sick folks he knew, until he had to give up gardening and driving a few years ago. He was an avid Braves fan, enjoyed playing Dominos, loved Gospel music and Southern home cooked foods. In 1944-45, Don was one of the many persons active in the actual labor of constructing St. Mark United Methodist Church. He has since been an active, supportive, faithful member of the Church and the Men's Bible Class. He loved his church, the ministers and members.
Viewing will be at 10:00 AM and services at 11:30 AM both at St. Mark United Methodist Church, Thursday April 24, 2008, followed by burial at Bayview Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Derek and Kevin Hall, Andy, Greg and Gary White and Matthew Newton.
Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel will be in charge of arrangements.
ALL YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS MISS YOU AND GRIEVE FOR YOU BUT CELEBRATE WITH JOY THAT YOU ARE NOW IN A BETTER PLACE FOR ETERNITY.
