3rd Battalion 7th Marines was activated 1 January 1941 at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and was assigned to the 1st Marine Brigade. In February 1941 they were reassigned to the 1st Marine Division.

Due to the situation in the Pacific, the 7th Marines were detached from the 1st Marine Division and sent to American Samoa with the Third Battalion being the first to arrive on 28 April 1942.[2] Companies I and M landed at Wallis Island on 27 March 1942[3] along with Free French forces to deny the Island to Vichy France.

3/7 participated in the following World War II campaigns: Guadalcanal. New Britain. Peleliu. Okinawa.

April 1940, 3rd Battalion was again reactivated. The fighting in World War II found the Marines of 3/5 at Guadalcanal, New Britain, Peleliu, and Okinawa.
New Britain
The convoy carrying the 1st Marine Division arrived at its destination early in the morning of December 26th. After a light naval and air bombardment, the Marines embarked on landing craft and headed towards the beaches. Under an aerial smoke screen, which only served to blind and confuse landing craft coxswains, the Marines swarmed ashore at 7:48am.

On New Years' Day 1944, BGen Lemuel C. Shepherd, the Assistant Commander of 1st Marine Division, launched a drive south toward Borgen Bay. One of the most difficult battles of the entire New Britain campaign occurred during this operation.
