Mary McClure Gardner was born in Virginia about 1801. She is thought to be the daughter of Seth C. McClure (b. abt. 1783 in Maryland d. bet. 1871-1880 in Cedar, IA). Her mother is unknown. She had two sisters: Isabella and Susanna. Isabella was born February 20, 1806 in PA. She was married to Solomon Rees (Reece) and died May 31, 1846 in Shelby, Ripley County, Indiana. Susannah was born November 13, 1807 in VA. She married John Lane, Jr. in Washington County, PA in 1830. She died April 2, 1890. Other siblings may have been Jane McClure (b. abt. 1800 in VA/m. Adam Jenkins), James McClure (b. abt. 1802 in Erie, PA), William McClure (b. abt. 1804 in PA), and Samuel McClure (January 8, 1810 in PA/ m. Kessiah Reese.

On April 29, 1824 Mary McClure married Jesse Gardner in Washington County, PA. They were married by Rev. Charles Wheeler of the First Pastor of the Baptist Church of Washington.

At the time of her marriage, Mary and her family were living in W. Bethlehem Twp. in Washington County, PA. Jesse and Mary are to have had eleven children, though only seven are known at this time: George (b. abt 1824), William (b. March 18, 1832), Alexander (b. abt. 1834), Margaret (b. July 27, 1836), Jonathan (b. abt. 1838), Cornelius L. (b. March 1842), & Lucinda (b. abt. 1843).

Sometime between 1843 and 1846, Jesse and Mary moved their family to Lee County, IA. Jesse passed away on August 30, 1846 in Lee County, IA and is probably buried there.
