Jonathan was the son of Jesse and Mary McClue Gardner. He was born in Beaver County, Pennsylvania and traveled with his family to Lee County, IA around 1845.

By the 1850 census his father had passed away, and he was living with his mother and family.

In the 1860 census, he is living in Harrison Twp., Lee County, IA. He is a farm laborer for Marietta Seely.

He enlisted as a Private on 7 November 1862 at the age of 24. He served for the Union in Company A, 7th Cavalry Regiment Iowa.

He drowned in a river on 21 May 1864 at Ponca, NE.
