Taylor – services for Lyman Ether Bates, 81, died yesterday in the Josephine Goldwater hospital Show Low, will be at 2 PM tomorrow in the Taylor Ward Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Burial will be in the Taylor cemetery.

Bates was born Tuba City. He moved to Flagstaff with his family when he was eight. The family moved to Utah and returned to Arizona several years later, coming to Taylor in 1908, according to Elkhorn mortuary in Holbrook.

He worked for the Arizona Highway Department for 12 years. He also worked for the Santa Fe Railway for 21 years, retiring in 1952 as a Boilermaker Inspector. Mr. Bates was a member of the church. He held various posts in the church including being High Priest, Sunday School Superintendent, Elders Quorum, High Priest Group Leader and Secretary to High Priest Quorum.

Survivors include his wife Margaret Perkins, two sons Stanley of Remey Air Force Base, Puerto Rico and Max of Los Angeles. Five daughters: Mrs Gwynn Machula, Globe, Mrs. Myra Neff of Colorado, Mrs Pearl Solomon and Mrs Marjorie Whiting both of Taylor and Mrs Anita Schmaltz of Gallup, New Mexico, one sister Mrs Aretha Gleason of Prescott, 37 grandchildren and 51 great grandchildren.
