DEATH OF MR W. J. WICKSA HIGHLY-RESPECTED RESIDENT.
The grim reaper, "Death," has again made itself conspicuous in our midst, this time claiming as its victim one of our oldest and most highly-respected
residents in the person of Mr William Joseph ("Grandfather") Wicks, of Bettington-street, who passed away suddenly on Sunday afternoon last at his home, and quite a gloom was cast over the town when the sad intelligence became known. The deceased, who was 74 years of age, was the second eldest son of the late Mr Nathaniel (" Natty") Wicks, and a native of the Gwydir River, came to this district at the age of nine years and has watched its progress for the past 65 years. The late Mr Wicks was well and favourably known throughout the length and breadth of the Merriwa district, and to the younger generation, for whom he always had a kind word, he was known as "grandfather" Wicks. He was one of the " old school, of exemplary character and happy, disposition, with a word for everybody, hence it was that he had earned for himself the title of one of Merriwa' s "grand old men," of whom it can aptly be said that " to live in hearts we leave behind is not to die . " Many of the old hands can recall to memory the days of the blade shears when the deceased as a young man was regarded as one of the best to be found in that calling, and could put through up to 170 sheep a day. Having chosen his partner in life, he settled down, and filled the position of head stockman on the Cullingral station (which at that time was held by the Messrs Blaxland Bros., and later, by Mr Cooper) for 27 years, a position filled by his father before him. He was one of the most competent men amongst cattle and horses to be found, and his advice was freely sought. Because of his expert knowledge in running to earth dingoes, which in those days were a menace to the district, the late Mr Wicks was also known as "Dingo Bill," and as those were the days when the "pups" ' had to be exhibited alive to the Board dealing with their destruction, before the scalps would be paid for, it was a common sight to see him taking along his catch which had subsequently to be destroyed by the Board. He used to say, "those were the days," and he would relate many reminiscences of the early days from which one could easily write a book. Deceased is survived by a sorrowing widow and family of four daughters and three sons, namely, Mesdames R. Hunt, Viv. Daniels, J. Cronin (Merriwa), R. J. Daniels (Gungal), Messrs. W. Wicks (Muswellbrook), Leo and Jack Wicks (Merriwa). There are also 60 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. The funeral took place on Monday, morning, and the large concourse of relatives, friends and sympathisers in attendance bore striking tribute to the esteem in which the departed one was held by all sections of the community and the sympathy felt for the bereaved ones. The remains were interred in the Roman Catholic portion of the Merriwa cemetery, the Rev. Father Ward officiating at the graveside. To the bereaved widow and members of the family we extend our most sincere sympathy in their sad and sudden affliction.
