Gudrun was the only child born to Mariane Jensen-Ettrup and Johannes Barth. Her father died shortly after her birth and her mother then married Nels Christen Christensen. Gudrun was walking home from school with her brother Christen Christensen when she accidently fell into a ditch, that was filled with water, and sadly drowned. Her parents and 4 younger siblings immigrated to America the following year.
