Ester was the first child born to Nels and Mariane Christensen after they had immigrated to the United States from Denmark in 1909. They immigrated after the death of Mariane's daughter Gudrun, from her first marriage to Johannes Barth. Ester was their 5th child, having 2 older brothers, Christen (Chris) and Christian Ettrup (Andy) along with 2 older sisters, Anna and Agnes. Ester's younger sister Inger was born shortly after her birth. Their mother Mariane died in 1917 in Nebraska. Ester and her sisters were very close throughout their lives. Ester was in and out of sanitoriums throughout her life and as her health deteriorated it was her sisters that were always there to care for her. Near the end of her life Ester and her husband Ray Barker mover to Port Orchard so that her sister Anna could help care for her.
