James Kimball Shelley, 77, died Oct. 7, 2004 in Winslow Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Joseph City to George Elsmore and Margaret Cleo Butler Shelley. He attended grade school in Joseph and graduated from Holbrook High School. He then enlisted in the Army, where he served in Korea. Following his military service he served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Mexico.

He then returned home and purchased a service station in Safford. While in Safford he met Carol Gardner and following a brief courtship they married Dec. 5, 1952 in the Mesa Temple. Eventually they returned to Joseph City where he owned service stations in Joseph, Winslow and Snowflake. He then became a Dale Carnage Instructor and also the Navajo County zoning inspector until his retirement in 1986.

Kimball is survived by his wife, Carol of Joseph City; two daughters, Claire Young of Joseph City and Lisa Frarck of Maricopa; two sons, Curtis Kim Shelley of Joseph City and James Doran Shelley of Brigham City, Utah; two brothers, Clark Shelley of Flagstaff and Eldon Shelley of Mesa; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 11 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Joseph City. Burial will follow in the Joseph City Cemetery.
