CAREY-Susan Mayer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Enoch Mayer, was born in Cedar county, Iowa, August 21, 1870, and passed away at the hospital in Grand Island, Neb., Sept. 19, 1921, at the age of 51 years and 29 days.
In January, 1887, she was united in marriage in Atlantic, Ia., to Clinton Carey of Anita, and to this union three children were born-Mrs. Dr. G. H. Parchen of Long Beach, Calif.; T. F. and Roy Carey of Greenfield, Iowa.
Mrs. Carey had been in ill health during the past year and was taken to the hospital at Grand Island, Neb., where her family and friends hoped that under special treatment she would be restored to health, but the bodily ailments from which she suffered failed to respond to the best of treatment, care and nursing, and the life of the devoted wife and mother, daughter, sister and friend passed out peacefully into the world beyond; and her passing away is mourned in the home circle, from which light, life and love have taken their flight forever.
A solemn murmur of the soul,
Tells of the world to be;
As travelers hear the billows roll,
Before they reach the sea.
It tells the anxious, yearning soul,
Heir of that world to be,
Beyond the grave's dark, silent goal,
Shall live eternally.
It tells that after winter's storms,
Come life, and joy, and bloom;
That life, anew, shall clothe the forms
That slumber in the tomb.
A number of years ago Mrs. Carey was baptized and united with the Lutheran church, demonstrating in her every-day life faith and confidence in the teachings of her Master and of a future existence.
In addition to the immediate family Mrs. Carey is survived by her parents, who reside at Tipton, Ia.; one adopted daughter, Mrs. Ruth Holliday of Greenfield, Ia.; six sisters and one brother; two of the sisters-Mrs. Dodds of Tipton and Mrs. Weaver of Rock Island, Ill.-being present at this sad service.
Funeral services were held at the M. E. church in Anita on Thursday conducted by the pastor, Rev. W. R. Radliff. Interment in Evergreen cemetery.
