Daughter of William McKinley & Patience Barrow

PROMINENT ATHENS WOMAN, DIES MON,
Monday evening at nine o'clock at her home on Baxter street, Mrs Mary McKinley Cobb, widow of the late Judge Howell Cobb, after a long illness, passed away. The news of the death of this beloved woman will carry deep sorrow to the hearts of thousands throughout this state and section.
Four score and two years had crowned her life, years in which she had illustrated the highest virtues of womanhood and had won for herself an abiding place in the hearts of all who knew her.
In the evening of life she walked through the shadows of physical suffering, her mind alert, her faith unshaken, her spirit tranquil and at peace and met her Pilot in perfect trust at the crossing of the bar.
Mrs Cobb was born in Lexington, Ga, in 1844. She was the daughter of Mr William McKinley and Mrs Patience Barrow McKinley. While she was yet an infant her parents moved to Milledgeville, Ga., where she spent the days of her young girlhood. Finishing the elementary schools there, she entered Lucy Cobb Institute, an institution that had just been founded through the efforts of General Thomas R R Cobb, and from that institution, she was graduated.
On May 22, 1865, she was married to the late Judge Howell Cobb, who had just returned from gallant service as captain in the Confederate army, since which time she was a beloved citizen of Athens. The day before she passed away was her sixty-second wedding anniversary, a day on which no doubt she joyfully communed in spirit with her lamented dead.
For forty-four years she was his faithful and affectionate companion until he passed away in 1900. One brilliant and promising son, Thomas R R Cobb, had preceded his father to the grave.
Mrs Cobb is survived by four sons and two daughters, Mr William McKinley Cobb of Washington D C; Mr Howell Cobb of El Paso, Texas; Mr Zach Lamar Cobb of Los Angeles, Cal; Mr Carlisle Cobb of Athens; Mrs Sarah Cobb Baxter of Athens; Miss Carolyn Cobb of Atlanta; by six grandchildren, Messrs Tom Howell Cobb of Atlanta; Mrs Louis Lester of Fort Myers Fla; Masters Carlisle and Howell Cobb and little Miss Mary McKinley Cobb of Athens; and by one great grandchild, little Charlotte Lester of Fort Myers, Fla.
From the time of her marriage until her death she had been a member of the First Presbyterian church of this city. During her younger days she was very active in the missionary work of the church and for many years was a devoted Sunday School teacher, having as the members of her class large numbers of the girls attending Lucy Cobb Institute.
She was in every way a typical daughter of the Old South, beautiful, refined, cultured, brilliant. The graces of Southern womanhood adorned her life and won for her whose loyalty and affection never wavered.
The funeral services will be held at eleven o'clock tomorrow (Wednesday) morning at the First Presbyterian church and will b conducted by the pastor Dr E L Hill, and the interment will be in Oconee cemetery.
