Vernon Guy Clifford born in Puyallup, Washington on October 15, 1915, passed away April 14, 2008 in Tacoma, Washington. Vern was surrounded by family members in his last days and hours. At his bedside were his daughters Celia, Linda & Dorothea; his son-in-law Joe; son Wayne R. Clifford and his grandson Chris Clifford.
Vern was a veteran of the United States Army and will be missed dearly by his family and friends.
He had many loves; he loved to garden, not the average garden, but acres of garden. He planted acres of strawberries, blends of berries and rows of fruit trees. He loved being outside from sunrise to sunset.
Vern loved to tell stories of his adventures during World War II. He was Eisenhower's body guard and he would always talk about the time he slipped on the steps and made an off handed comment about "darn limey shoes" in front of Eisenhower and he made Eisenhower smile.
Vern loved being an entomologist. He discovered a species of Cicindela (Tiger Beetles) and was acknowledged in the Washington State Entomological Society Magazine (Volume 42, 1984) for his assistance in research.
Vern loved music! He listened to a variety of music like the Ink Spots, Willie Nelson, Linda Ronstadt, Elvis Presley and his two favorites-Judy Garland and Charlotte Church. He also liked to play the organ-very loudly!
Vern loved movies-he liked Lost Horizon, Swiss Miss, Wizard of Oz, Flim Flan Man, Patton and he cried every time he watched It's A Wonderful Life.
He loved to bird watch and he could name the bird and imitate their calls. He loved everything in nature, from walking on his property to walking through the woods while hunting.
All of the things he loved to do have become part of his children's lives and we are thankful for him introducing us to all of his loves.
