Former Auxiliary Bishop for the Diocese of Mainz, and Bishop of the Titular See of Taborenta, Monsignor Wolfgang Rolly, was born in Darmstadt, Germany, on November 25, 1927. The second of five children of a family of teachers, following his elementary studies, he entered seminary and studied theology and philosophy in Mainz, Munich and later at Frankfurt-Sankt Georgen.

On February 28, 1953, at the age of 25, he was ordained to the priesthood by Msgr. Albert Stohr, Bishop of Mainz, after receiving the Diaconate on December 24, 1952. Following his ordination, Rolly served between 1953 and 1959 as chaplain within the parishes of Lämmerspiel, Gau-Algesheim, and Lampertheim. In 1959, he entered school service and until 1972, he was one of the teachers at the Maria-Ward-Schule in Mainz. In 1971, he was named secretary of the Board of Priests of the Diocese of Mainz.

On June 5, 1972, aged 44, Pope Paul VI named him Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Mainz during the episcopacy of Cardinal Hermann Volk. He received his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Taborenta from the named Cardinal Volk, assisted by Bishops Heinrich Tenhumberg and Joseph Maria Reuß. His episcopal motto read "Cum Christo Trans Muros".

Since 1978, Rolly had been a member of the Cathedral Chapter of Mainz. Following the resignation of Cardinal Volk on December 27, 1982, he was selected as Kapitularvikar and therefore led temporarily the Diocese of Mainz until Msgr. Karl Lehmann was named Bishop of the See. For years he served as Bischofsvikar for the pastoral administration and kept his contributions for education within the diocese. Within the German Bishops Conference he held between 1979 and 1986, the office of the German Jugendbischofs and since 1972, he was a member of the Pastoral Commission, as well as for the Commission for Schools and also the Commission for Media. In 1986, he was appointed canon dean of the named Cathedral Chapter of Mainz, and engaged himself as the cathedral's curator for its maintenance.

On February 20, 2003, Msgr. Rolly retired from active ministry aged 75. He resigned his offices as cathedral dean and bischofsvikar on April 30, of the same year.
