Kenneth McKane was born June 8, 1900 at Foxhome, Minn., the son of Thomas E. McKane and Margaret McKane. Corning to Steele, N.D. in 1903 with his parents at the age of 3 he grew up in the Steele community. He was educated in the Steele School and attended the North Dakota Agricultural College, now known as North Dakota State. In 1920 he went to work as a telegraph operator for the Northern Pacific Railway, working various small towns as station agent. In 1942 he worked as agent at Driscoll, coming to Steele in the summer of 1953 where he remained until he retired December 20, 1966.
In May 1923 he married Luella Olson of Lidgerwood, N.D. Luella (better known as Ole) graduated from Wahpeton State School of Science and Valley City State Teachers College. She spent 30-odd years teaching in North Dakota schools, nine in Pleasant Hill, 11 in Driscoll and the balance in Steele, where she taught until she retired in 1965. The McKanes have one daughter, Kay (Mrs. Roger Thorson), who is a registered nurse and currently working in the 12th Street Clinic in Riverton, Wyo. Roger was in school administration until 1973 when he bought a farm near Riverton, which he now operates. Kay and Roger have two children: Tina and Kent. Tina is married to Harry Petty and they are in Laramie, Wyo., attending the University of Wyoming where he is in pre-law. Kent graduated from high school in May 1980 and is now attending college in Casper, Wyo. Kenneth McKane is a member of Chancellor-Walworth Masonic Lodge of Steele, N.D., of which he is a Past Master. He is also Past Patron of the Steele Chapter of Order of Eastern Star. Luella is charter member of the Steele Chapter of Order of Eastern Star and a Past Matron. She is also a charter member of the Steele Fine Arts Club. Kenneth and Luella now reside in the rural community of Riverton, Wyo., having moved there in 1977.
