In 1915 a cyclone hit Carrie and Thelma's farm leveling every building. Carrie died from her injuries. A hired man found Thelma in a ditch of muddy water, face down and he managed to save her life. Thelma came to live with her Kealiher cousins and attended Star School. Her mother, Carrie, left a will leaving everything she owned to Thelma with the stipulation that she was not to marry until she was 18. As soon as she turned 18 she married a young man who was apparently after her money. They had one child, Cecil. As soon as the money ran out, including the farm they sold, he took their son and disappeared.
