Cárlos Curti was born in Gallicchio, Province of Potenza, in the region of Basilicata. He is best known as the leader and founder of the "Orquesta Tipica Mexicana." He is credited for bringing the Neapolitan mandolin to the attention of the American public in 1880 in New York City. He learned the violin at a young age and performed with Maurice Grau's French Opera Company as a teenager, studied piano with his brother Giovanni, and became a popular xylophonist as he was dubbed "King of the Xylophone" in Mexican newspapers.
