His clearest memories of his early life are of work. He was a caddie and then a stock boy, carryout and sometimes delivery man in a local grocery store. Three weeks prior to his 18th birthday, he enlisted in the Marine Corps. He was assigned to aviation electronics school where he learned general electronics theory and the theory, operation, maintenance and repair of specific aircraft navigation and communications systems.

He married the love of his life, Terry Pate, on April 22, 1999. He started work at Crane in 1963. He served in a number of technician jobs over the next 18 ½ years. In January 1975 he enrolled at Indiana University with hopes of attaining a degree in Business. He continued to work full-time at Crane while pursuing his college degree. He then had a chance to take a lateral assignment as Administrative Officer for a 320 person department with a ten-person staff. After 3 years, he was asked to move into a staff role to the Commanding Officer relating to New Business/New Ventures.

The Director of Operations selected him to participate in a graduate management certificate program through IU while serving on staff. He later was given the opportunity to acquire a Master's Degree through a continuation of the program. His last year before retirement was spent in Washington, D.C. working at headquarters helping with the Base Realignment and Closure Process. He then worked part-time as an academic counselor at Indiana University for 9 years.

Survivors include his wife, Terry, daughter, Angela (Kelly) Siffin, his step-daughters Lisa (Dan) Burnham, Jennifer (Scott) Coyle and step-sons Joshua (Mira) Auxier and Jacob (Fone) Auxier.
