SAMUEL V. BOWERS
Services were held last week for former Wichitan Samuel Victor Bowers, 86, of Phoenix, Ariz., retired linotype operator who died last Sunday.
Born near Furley, he moved to Wichita in 1887. He completed his apprenticeship on the linotype at The Wichita Beacon and then worked for both The Wichita Beacon and The Wichita Eagle until 1905. He moved to Seattle, Wash., then to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, to work on the Victoria Times. He worked there for 25 years.
He returned to the United States in 1929 and worked for the Boston Globe and the Los Angeles Examiner. He retired in 1953 and moved to Phoenix in 1956.
Survivors include his widow, Frona; and two sons. One son, Raymond V., is sociology department head at University of Arizona, Tucson.
