John Jay Big Mountain of East Greenbush, NY, passed away on September 17, 2023, at the Albany Stratton VA Medical Center. He was 77 years old.

John Jay (Little Beaver) Big Mountain was born on July 8, 1946. He was the sixth child born to Chief Sebastian and Princess White Dove (Mary Lucy Moya) Big Mountain of Lake Mohawk, Sparta, in Sussex County, NJ.

John served in the United States Army from 1965-1969. He was in the First Infantry Division during the Vietnam War. During his two tours in Vietnam, he received numerous medals for his bravery, including the Bronze Star.

John is survived by his daughter, Yvette (Brandon) Smith; his sister, Mary Ann Bensen; his grandson, Rocco Nasso; his longtime companion, Jean Tiberia; and many nieces and nephews.

John was predeceased by his mother, Princess White Dove (1952); his father, Chief Sebastian (1954); brothers, Arthur (Iron Horse) (2000), Sebastian (Laughing Water) (2015), William (Red Fox) (2015); and sister, Nancy Frances (Sky Eagle) (2004).

Family and friends are invited to attend his service with military honors on October 5, 2023, 1:00 p.m., at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.
