Big Mountain was born on Jan. 29, 1941, in Newton, N.J., to the late Sebastian and Mary Lucy Big Mountain, and was the first Native American baby born in Sussex County, N.J., in 141 years.

He was raised at Lake Mohawk, N.J., and was one of six children. He came to Paris in the late 1960s to perform at the Indian Village in Routon. Along with his family, he danced and told Indian legends at the village and at schools and community centers throughout West Tennessee. After a brief time away, he returned to Paris in 1974 with his wife, Melanie Big Mountain, and his son. He also was employed at Salant and Salant Manufacturing and Sam and Mary's Florist. He moved to Florida in the late 1970s.

He was later married to Mary Ann Big Mountain, Ocala, Fla., who survives him, and he is survived locally by his son: David William (Holly) "Little Fox" Big Mountain; and his grandson: Beau Mitchell "Big Bear" Big Mountain.
