Queen of Spain. Born in the Royal Palace of Madrid, the niece of Queen Isabel II of Spain and the granddaughter of King Louis Philippe I of France, she married her cousin King Alfonso XII of Spain on January 23, 1878. She died of typhoid fever five months after the marriage and was mourned by the Spanish people who adored her. Her remains were first buried in the Monasterio del Escorial, and transferred in 2000 to the Cathedral of Madrid.
