Death of Mrs. Susan Cushman
Mrs. Susan Cushman died at her home on Rock Island street yesterday morning at 9:15 o'clock, aged 79 years.

Mrs. Cushman had resided in this town nearly as long as any who are now living here, having been born in Gouverneur in 1818. She was the daughter of Josiah Waid, one of the early sheriffs of St. Lawrence county. Her mother was the daughter of Isaac Austin, and she in 1806, when a child, with her father's family and three other families came through the wilderness from Washington county in this state to what was then the township of Cambrav and four years later was formed into the town of Gouverneur. The above mentioned four families, with Mrs. Cushman's grandfather, Isaac Austin, as a leader, were the first settlers in this section of the country. Mrs. Cushman was thus familiar with all the early history of the town and versed in the stories of the trials and successes of those early days, with the exception of a period of two years she had always resided in Gouverneur. Of her father's family two brothers and one sister still survive.

Mrs. Cushman was the mother of nine children, some of whom died in infancy or childhood, three of whom, Talcott, Carlyle, and Matie who was the wife of Frank Johnson, of Ogdensburg, passed away after reaching years of maturity, and three daughters, Mrs. Wm. Whitney, Mrs. G. B. Barnes, and Miss Cushman, all of this village, remain. Mrs. Cushman had been in feeble health for many years, and for nearly two years past she had bran confined to her bed. During all these years of her feebleness she received the unceasing loving care of her daughter, Miss Cushman, whose watchfulness add devotion to her mother's comfort were noteworthy.

The funeral will be held from her late home tomorrow afternoon, Rev. W. F. Skinner, pastor of the Presbyterian church of which she had long been a member, officiating. Besides her daughters before mentioned, there survive of her descendants four grandsons, A. K. Cushman, of this village, Addis N. and Wilbur Whitney, and Dr. Albert Johnson, of New York City.
