His name was spelled How (e).

A Blacksmith and Miller by trade he built and or operated Grist Mills in Ohio, Beaver Dam Wisconsin, and Steelville Missouri.

One of his more famous Mills is now called Beckman Mill, which is located in Rock County on the Racoon creek. This mill he sold in 1882 to August Beckman and today is the only Grist Mill in Wisconsin that still in operation, and one of only 16 in the United States still using the original stones, and water power, to grind grains.

He lived for 25 years in Beaver Dam, as a blacksmith and miller before moving to Rock county.

He had a brother James Madison, who was a Millwright. James lived and worked in Belvidere Illinois, Beloit Wisconsin and the Fox River Valley in Wisconsin.

Family:

He was married to Elizabeth and they had the following children:
Anson, Harrison, Orlando, Mary, Emery, Emmerson and Lemuel.

Anson drowned in 1873. Orlando was killed in a railway accident in 1897 in Arkansas.

William How's widowed wife moved back to Wisconsin to live with a son, and died and is buried in Wisconsin.
