Mary Medora "Dora" Lucas Witherspoon was the second wife of Rev. James Hamilton Witherspoon of Waterloo, AL. They married Jan. 25, 1877. He was 68 and she was 34. According to the census records they were neighbors prior to their marriage.

She was the mother of James Hamilton Gordon (J.G.) Witherspoon of Ada, OK and Rosa Adela Witherspoon of Waterloo, AL. She died at the age of 73 in Ada, OK. She was buried on March 3, 1917 so she probably died the day before.

Dora's son J.G. Witherspoon is buried in Rosedale Cemetery in Ada, OK along with his wife Elizabeth and daughter Dorothy Witherspoon Price and her husband Orval, and Dora's grandson Joe Ray "Bunny" Witherspoon. Her great great grandson Matthew Alvin Files is also buried in Rosedale in Ada. Her granddaughter Mary Adella Witherspoon is buried in Fairview Cemetery in Shawnee, OK. Her grandson Gordon Marable Witherspoon is buried in Llano Cemetery in Amarillo, TX. Her grandson Phillip Edgar Witherspoon is buried in Elmwood Memorial Park in Abilene, TX.

Dora's daughter Rosa Adela and her husband Rev. James Hamilton Witherspoon are buried in the Richardson Cemetery in Waterloo, AL in Lauderdale Co. Rosa Adela died Aug. 4, 1901 and Rev. Witherspoon passed away May 21, 1883.

The Shawnee, OK City Directory showed Dora living with her son J.G. in Shawnee in 1909, 1910, and 1912 at 131 S. Center. It is my belief that she lived with her son J.G. and wife Elizabeth Witherspoon from the time of their marriage in 1907 until her death in 1917.

To the right is a picture of Dora's son J.G. Witherspoon of Ada, OK in about 1907, the year he married Elizabeth Marable. He was a prominent businessman and civic leader in Ada, OK for many years. Go to Click to view all images on the right under Add photo to see pictures of her granddaughter Dorothy Witherspoon Price in 1945 and grandsons (L to R) Joe Ray "Bunny", Phillip Edgar, and Gordon Marable Witherspoon around 1921.

Also, to the right are pictures of her new monument. For 91 years she didn't have one. When I (her great granddaughter) found out where she was buried after a long search, and saw there was no monument, I got her one which was set on May 9, 2008. The saying on the back was the one Dora put on her daughter's monument, "Safely anchored in the harbor of eternal rest."
