Gayle Neuhaus, age 82, of Winnetoon, Nebraska died Tuesday, August 29, 2023, at her residence.

I, Gayle Lee Neuhaus, moved from Main Street, Winnetoon to the Winnetoon Cemetery and the Great Beyond on Tuesday, August 29, 2023.

I was born on a Thursday afternoon, August 21, 1941, at Maywood, California to William and Arlene Fredrickson Neuhaus. In 1948, Grandpa George Fredrickson's heart attack brought us to Winnetoon, Knox County, Nebraska, just in time for the big blizzard of '48 and '49. Oh, how I loved the snow that winter! Winnetoon, Nebraska...I was home!

In 1950, I finally got the baby brother I had prayed for, William "Billy" Vernon Neuhaus.

I attended Winnetoon grade school in the big brick six room building. Only one room was used for kindergarten through eighth. My high school years were spent at St. Ludger Academy in Creighton. During my teens, I was baptized and confirmed at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Winnetoon.

I started my own business about 1970, antique sales and restoration. This I continued until 2007, when my daughter, Tarese, and her husband took over the restoration. I kept the sales end along with the Winnetoon Contract Post Office, which I had operated since 1989.

In 1994, I bought several lots on the west side of Winnetoon's Main Street. For years I dreamed. Now, my dream of Winnetoon 1910 Board Walk Back in Time would become a reality. A tourist attraction was built with old time Winnetoon building front replicas set amongst prairie grasses and wildflowers, and of course, privy Path, my outhouse collection.

For this project I depended on help from the Carving Cowboy, Joe Serres. It may have been my dream, but it was Joe's nightmare. After months of hard work, it came together, and we entertained bus tours up to the time Joe died in 2007.

When I was twelve, I started delving into the history of Winnetoon and taking pictures of the businesses along Main Street. In 2006, many years later, the book was published.

The past several years creating family files of early Winnetoon residents and adding obituaries to Find A Grave on the internet became a passion.

Most of my life has been connected with history, getting the Winnetoon City Jail on the National Register, moving my great-great-grandparents log cabin into the Village Park, salvaging and restoring the Creighton Trading Post and my Fredrickson family Dist. #58 schoolhouse onto the lots along the Board Walk.

My earthly remains will stay in Winnetoon, right beside my Fredrickson great-great-grandparents in the Winnetoon Cemetery, originally my Oleson family cemetery, my children have been instructed to erect a plaque that says, "I was into history, now, I am history."

I spent many years researching and compiling family into 15 notebooks. Yet so many questions have gone unanswered. Will I be able to quiz my ancestors now?

"Fourth great grandfather, tell me who murdered you." "Grandpa Julius, who were your parents?" "Mom, you had a beauty shop in Winnetoon?" "Dad, tell me about making airplane parts during WWII."

From my marriage, I received three blessings, Jeff, Gina and Tarese Prochaska. They, in turn, blessed me with Jeff's son, Luke; Gina's husband, David Volenec, children, Anna and Will; Tarese's husband, Robert Folck, his children, Jen, Jerry and Dusty and their families, and Tarese's sons, Jonathon and Abraham Schahrer, and from Jonathon, his wife, Lora, and son Jayden and daughter Lydia.

Jonathon told me, "Grandma, we are goin to have a lot of work to do when you pass?" You are so right, Jon. There are only nine lots and nine buildings to sort through. Have at it, kids!

While you are working, I am questioning my ancestors and listening to Dad whistle tunes day and night.
