Sutherland was a First Orderly Sergeant in the Home Guard, Company E 21st Virginia Calvary during the Civil War, said his descendent, Bill Sutherland.

He wed Sylvia Counts in August 1843 and served with his son and several members of his wife’s family during the war.

Sutherland first settled on the mountain above Frying Pan Creek, and then atop Long Ridge. He owned around 1,000 acres and later donated land and logs for the first school house on Frying Pan in 1875 and for the Sulphur Spring Primitive Baptist Church in 1898.

Sutherland served as constable and deputy sheriff in Buchanan County, was active in the formation of Dickenson County in 1880, was one of two men appointed by the General Assembly to divide Dickenson County into magisterial districts and to locate voting precincts. He also served as the first chairman of the Dickenson County Board of Supervisors from 1880-1887.
