Captain Ulises Burgos-Cruz, of Puerto Rico, was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, based at Fort Riley, Kansas. He joined the Army in June 2001 and was an ordnance officer serving on a military transition team. He died in Balad, Iraq, when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He is survived by his wife, who he married in 2001. Capt. Burgos-Cruz was buried with the ashes of 2 of their children who passed away before birth. His wife is expecting anther child in the summer of 2008.
