Born September 9, 1924 near Morales, Texas, to Beatrice and George Norman. She attended Hutson-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas. She was a graduate of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale with a Bachelor's Degree in education. She earned a Master's Degree in teaching from Webster University in Webster Groves. Mrs. Brackens taught elementary education for 34 years. Her career began in Steele, Missouri. When she and her family moved to Rock Hill, she taught at Schall Elementary and Avery Elementary schools in Webster Groves School District. She retired in 1980. Mrs. Brackens was a member of St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Brentwood, Missouri and a life member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. She volunteered her time to many worthwhile causes, including the St. Louis Art Museum and O.A.S.I.S. of St. Louis (Education & Volunteer Services for Seniors).
